Are there any naming guidelines for picking a domain name?

Domain names must consist of letters, numbers, and hyphens (however they cannot begin or end with a hyphen "-"). Special characters such as the underscore and exclamation mark are not permitted. There is also a length restriction of 63 characters, including the 4 characters which identify the top level domain (i.e. '.com').
